Projects

For over a decade, concerned citizens have engaged in informal fundraising to secure funds for all the initiatives undertaken. These include the following...

This project was initiated by the Historic Pig and Whistle Inn. Donors pay R450.00 for a carved wooden pig to be placed on the beams at the Pig and Whistle. The proceeds of this and your monthly/once-off contribution will be used to support community capacity building in the education, sports and general upliftment of our community.

As one of the oldest and most well-known businesses in the village, the Historic Pig and Whistle Inn recognised its responsibility to the community, and started the Pigs for People project, which now falls under the larger BDT umbrella.

This project is by far the biggest in the trust, and has raised in excess of R400,000 to uplift the community. Pigs for People primarily assists educational facilities such as local schools and sustainable community upliftment projects. Amongst other smaller grants, the project has provided:

  • A netball court at Qhayiya Primary School
  • Stationery for the Bathurst Primary School
  • Garden equipment for a sustainable home garden project in Nolukhanyo, the Ndinani Gardens Project
  • Music equipment and teacher training for the primary school

Pigs for People also provides assistance on request to the Nemato Rugby Club, the Tiger Titans Cricket Club, The Bathurst Hub (an activity-based organisation), The Sakhuluntu Youth Group and the Entandweni Afterschool Centre. Prior to the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic, Pigs for People was in the process of acquiring six rainwater tanks to secure water for subsistence farmers. These tanks will be installed after the pandemic lockdown is lifted.

Local entrepreneurs who craft various handmade goods (hats, scarves, toys, etc.) can also request raw materials from Pigs for People.

Arising generally from the Covid-19 crisis, this initiative provided urgent assistance to people in the Trust’s designated areas, once the crisis had abated, leftover funds were used for the Grow Nolukhanyo Project.
This project provides funding for the establishment and running of the annual village-wide Bathurst Country Affair, often this project is fully funded so contributions are rolled over to the New Year allowing the event to become bigger and better.

For six years in a row, this community-based project has created an environment for all the businesses in the community to participate in a village-wide market. The project supplies central buying power and marketing support which would be unavailable to the businesses and participants individually. Each year about R30,000 is raised and largely recovered from businesses and members of the community, any excess generated is either donated to charity or retained to kick-start the next event.

This project was initiated by the Frontier Bonsmara Group. Donors pay R450.00 for a carved Bull to be placed near the Frontier Bonsmara Whisky Bar at the Pig and Whistle. The proceeds of this and your monthly/once-off contribution will be split amongst charities and causes agreed with the farmers.

The success of the Pigs for People project (above) prompted a group of cattle farmers to approach the Pig and Whistle and request the organisers of Pigs for People to undertake a similar initiative with beneficiaries near to the cattle-farming community’s hearts. As a result over R27,000 has been raised for the local SPCA, Hospice and similar organisations.

Historic Bathurst is a registered NPO which maintains the Heritage sites in and around Bathurst, which are not maintained by an owner. Its projects include the Toposcope, Bradshaw’s Mill and the Powder Magazine.

Historic Bathurst is itself a non-profit organisation whose objective is to maintain the Heritage sites on Municipal ground in Bathurst which are crucial to the continued appeal of the village as a destination for local and international tourists. This NPO continually struggles for funding and is looking to the Bathurst Development Trust to provide financial resources for its work.
